Woodcraft Sweepstakes Winner Meets The American Woodshop Hosts Scott & Suzy PhillipsBack to Press Releases
PARKERSBURG, W. VA. (June 2012) — Robert Edwards, winner of the “American Dream Shop Giveaway with Scott Phillips” sweepstakes, and his wife, Noreen, were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the set of The American Woodshop with hosts Scott & Suzy Phillips and spent time in Scott’s shop learning new woodworking skills during a trip that was part of the sweepstakes prize. They all worked on Season 20 projects together.

Edwards’ name was randomly selected in December 2011 from more than 26,000 unique entries in the sweepstakes sponsored by Woodcraft, The American Woodshop, Delta Power Equipment Corporation, Porter-Cable and Kreg Tool Company. The $14,000 grand prize package included $10,000 in woodworking tools, plus the expense-paid trip to Piqua, Ohio, to visit Phillips.

“What Noreen and I enjoyed the most about our trip was the way Scott and Suzy made us feel, welcomed and part of the family. Their hospitality and good-natured character made us feel at home and at ease,” Robert said.

The Eureka, California, couple was first introduced to Scott’s woodworking expertise as they watched the WBGU-TV PBS hosts turn pens for The American Woodshop, a PBS show now in its 19th season. Next, Robert and Noreen spent time in the shop with Scott for some hands-on instruction.

“Scott is a great teacher, and he was so willing to share his wisdom and advice regarding woodworking. He took the time to show both Noreen and I how to turn pens and how to sharpen the chisels we used to turn the pens,” Robert said. “He also took the time to show me how to use a skew chisel for turning pens, answered my questions on the use of equipment and helped me to troubleshoot problems I am having with my table saw.”

The couple also spent time getting to know Scott and Suzy during times away from the set and the shop. “They are both great conversationalists, great to sit down to talk to. We spent hours at the restaurants talking over and after dinner. Not only did they open up The American Woodshop to us, but also their home,” Robert said.

Robert and Noreen were also filmed during their trip by Woodcraft social media specialist Frank Byers for his blog, Woodworking Adventures. View more about their trip at http://blog.woodcraft.com.

After retirement, Robert followed in his father-in-law’s footsteps and began woodworking. With his wife’s encouragement, he attended classes at the College of the Redwoods campus in his hometown. He was in the process of equipping his garage shop when he entered “The American Dream Shop Giveaway” and won $10,000 worth of tools. “I want to give a big ‘thank you’ to the sponsors and staff who made it possible for me to get serious about woodworking,” Robert said.
