Helping Business Owners Go Into Business For – not By – ThemselvesBack to Press Releases
PARKERSBURG, WV (March 2010) – Starting your own business from scratch is a very challenging experience, which is why many people choose to open a franchise. Woodcraft – America’s oldest woodworking retailer – helps its franchisees minimize those challenges by allowing them to go into business for themselves, but not by themselves.

Woodcraft provides its franchisees with the blueprint, infrastructure and support to help them be successful,” said Mary Winkler, owner of Woodcraft stores in Harrisburg and Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore, Maryland.

Winkler opened the first Woodcraft franchise in Allentown. Her husband, Ray, then left his job at the time to join Mary in the business. Over the course of the following year and a half, pleased with their initial progress, they purchased the two additional stores.

Ray Winkler said, “Woodcraft helps the franchisee maximize opportunities for growth and viability.”

He offered the following examples of the assistance Woodcraft provided that they found particularly helpful:
  • Working with the franchise owner to develop an executable business plan;
  • Hand-holding through and beyond the start-up phase;
  • Providing an accurate and easy to use inventory management system;
  • -
  • National branding and customer service support.
Woodcraft, whose franchise program started in 1998, provides a system of support and training to the franchisee which covers all aspects of the operation. For new owners, this support includes 10 days of training in the home office, as well as help with real estate selection, store setup, and having a trainer on-site for a week before the store opens and throughout the first week of operation. Once open, franchisees are assigned a regional field consultant whose goal is to help owners any way needed to enhance sales and profits.

The company also offers one of the industry’s best point of sale systems to help manage the business, with specific emphasis on inventory control, management and replenishment.

Gary Lombard, Woodcraft’s director of franchise development, said, “Our store owners appreciate our unique inventory ordering system. The product comes in to the store labeled, priced and ready to go on the shelf.”

“We’re with our franchisees every step of the way, “Lombard added. “We are working with them daily throughout the life of the business to help them grow and prosper.”
