All waxes are organic compounds whether they’re man made or naturally occurring and are among the very first finishes we used to protect wood. As a primary coating, they’re among the least protective of wood but that does not diminish the role they have in protecting what we make. Wax is also a natural lubricant which can make drawers easier to operate and screws easier to drive.
Polishes come in a wide variety of formulations. Some contain wax, some minute amounts of abrasive compound, some oil and some vinegar but all are intended to clean, protect and of course, polish. They’ll generally remove dirt, dust and even wax.
Cleaners are generally used to remove wax and oils. They may be used prior to repairing or gluing where retouch work will be done or just to remove dirt or grime.
